The People’s Palace
The first New Zealand People’s Palace opened on the corner of Wellesley and Lorne Streets in Auckland on 1 August 1903 providing accommodation for travellers and working people. The People's Palace occupied a prominent position in the centre of the city close to public transport. The building had been a former stable which The Salvation Army converted into very acceptable accommodation for single people and families, with a dining room that provided low cost but nourishing meals. In the same building, but accessible by a separate entrance down the street, they also provided cheap but clean accommodation for men who needed a meal and a bed.
