Street Week | The Salvation Army

Street Week

Once again, this year, Salvation Army volunteers will be out in force across the country in towns and communities with their collection buckets for the annual Red Shield Appeal Street Week collection between 6th – 12th May.

“Our Red Shield Appeal is when we are out on the streets seeking donations to support the ongoing work of The Salvation Army in our communities,” says Peter Lobb, National Red Shield Street Appeal Manager.

This year’s Street Appeal is even more significant because it is the 60th year that the Street Week collection has been run. Thousands of volunteers in Salvation Army-branded, high-visibility vests will be prominently located at over 450 sites across the country, including train and bus stations, and outside shopping malls and business centres.

The theme for this year’s appeal is helping Kiwis stay above the poverty line. “Times continue to be tough with the challenges that the cost of living presents to so many, and we are seeing more people than ever come to our doors for assistance and support,” says Tim Hamilton, Territorial Supporter Engagement & Fundraising Director. This includes providing food parcels, budgeting advice, counselling, advocacy, and housing support.

This year, as well as the traditional method of dropping cash into a bucket, the public can donate by using eftpos, on a phone app called Mika (Android phones only), or by scanning a QR code which takes them the Salvation Army website.

“We’re hoping that people will really dig deep and put whatever they can afford into the buckets of our collectors,” says Mr Hamilton.

“We’re excited to be back on the streets again this year and hope that our enthusiastic, highly visible collectors will see a much-needed bump in funds for those most in need,” adds Peter.
