This year’s report Tangata Whenua, Tangata Tiriti, Huia Tangata Kotahi—People of the Land, People of the Treaty, Bring Everyone Together promotes a unified approach to key social issues like adequate housing for all, the wellbeing and safety of our children, and reducing poverty levels.
The report shows mixed results but acknowledges improvement in increased welfare spending, decline in offending and imprisonment, and an increase in the number of social houses built. Areas for sustained action include youth suicide, household poverty, addictions, and personal debt.
There are major challenges for us as a nation but there’s also some good progress and so we need to be hopeful. Hope can be a powerful thing, even in policy and politics.
