Submission to Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2024

Submission to the Social Services Select Committee
State Housing
Posted July 3, 2024

Summary

  • The Salvation Army Te Ope Whakaora opposes the reintroduction of 90-day no-cause evictions. We believe this will increase rental housing insecurity for low-income renters and contribute to increasing homelessness.
  • We support the provisions that expand the context in which family violence may be used to end a tenancy at 48 hours’ notice.
  • We support permitting the Tenancy Tribunal to decide cases ‘on papers’ so long as this is with the clear consent of both parties involved.
  • We believe the approach being taken to pet bonds will disadvantage renters especially those on low incomes who will face higher bond payments and unlimited liability for pet damage.
