A man once told me every Christian that he knew had come to faith through tragedy and that faith was a crutch for people.
This made me think about why I became a Christian. I looked at my journey to faith and realized that this was true for me.
CS Lewis said “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." I would never have recognized my need for God in my life had it not been for the pain I was experiencing.
However I disagree with the man, faith in God is not a crutch. The comfort we receive from the knowledge of and belief in God is not a crutch. As the Psalmist said, God is a very real and present help in time of need. What are you going through? Whatever it is, God is with you even if you don’t know it. God is calling out offering words of comfort and encouragement.
1 Thessalonians 2 says we are to “live lives worthy of God, who calls you [us] into his kingdom and glory” the point is that God calls to you in every circumstance and if you listen carefully you will hear what He has to say. Right now God is calling you. Are you listening?
