Out and About with Julie

A real highlight for me over the past couple of months has been a visit to the Far North of Aotearoa, where we managed to sneak a visit in before the Red Alert Level! We visited four Salvation Army corps, all the way up to Kaitaia.

We looked at some of the complexities and opportunities in the region, as the Army continues to support people in practical ways throughout Covid, especially with women and children who are suffering from immense housing needs.

What really amazed me were the women I met – not only officers, but youth and children’s workers, and women working in Community Ministries, Family Stores and housing. These were just incredible women, who were so experienced, compassionate and passionate about what they do and how they can make a difference. It’s so inspiring to meet these women who have found a great place to belong, work, worship and serve with us.  

Major Alison Moody, Territorial WM Coordinator, attended the International Women’s Caucus NZ on my behalf, where the Minister of Women Jan Tinette gave an update. Alison made excellent connections with other professionals working to advocate for women, from groups as far ranging as Presbyterian Support to the Prostitutes Collective. ‘As we fulfil our mission to the “whosoever” it’s so important we join with women who have expertise and we can learn from, both in the Christian sphere and in our wider society, because we are for everyone,’ said Alison.

This year I’ve joined an online Bible study group through BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) and we’ve been going through the book of Matthew. I've just been so encouraged by the stories of Jesus, and captivated again by how he treated people, and how he valued others. That both inspires and challenges me – I ask myself, ‘Am I like Jesus in the way I act and react?’
