She's got an army of supporters: Northern Division's Women's Ministries Project
The Salvation Army Northern Division is moving mountains for women in their 2020 Divisional Women's Ministries 'Support-her Project'. All fundraising this year goes toward sending women from Epsom Lodge, Auckland and Northland-based Recovery Churches to a Salvation Army adventure camp for women in 2021!
While COVID may have slowed many plans for public gathering, it hasn't stopped women and Corps around Northern Division from raising money throughout the year for their Support-her Project. They're raising funds to send as many women as they can from Epsom Lodge and Auckland/Northland-based Recovery Churches to The Salvation Army Blue Mountain Adventure Centre's Empower Women's Adventure Camp in 2021.
Young Salvationist and BMAC instructor Rose Keen pioneered the idea for the camp, which will be held for the first time next year at BMAC's site in Raurimu. She wanted to see women challenge their own physical and mental boundaries, and empower them to seek adventure and change.
The secret weapon of the Home League Sales Table
The women from New Lynn Home League tell us that they're known for 'warm fellowship, inspiring speakers and generous-hearted members with a bunch of fun thrown in,' but that their 'secret weapon' is their Home League's Sales Table!
'Women rise early on a Wednesday morning and catch public transport before 8am to be the first to bag a bargain. Major Colleen Griffiths and Karen Gates staff the table, and Colleen often models the goods on offer.'
'While COVID has meant that Home League has only been held for around half of the scheduled weeks and there have not been opportunities for other fundraising efforts - the Sales Table has raised close to $1200.'
They have a Car Boot Sale planned to raise even more, saying 'women are eager for a bargain and to make a difference for others – in this case sending women to BMAC!'.

Hungry for fundraising
The women of Otahuhu Corps have raised money by their women's Christmas event at the end of last year, and a St Patrick's Day event with sales tables and donations. 'The hall was decorated in green and most of the ladies wore something green too. There were jokes, familiar Irish jingles sung to Christian words and a limerick writing competition that produced some hilarious results!' They tell us that one of the highlights was an Irish dance performed by a mother and daughter and the themed meals they shared together.
Many other groups have also been faithfully fundraising. Their combined efforts will send women on to the adventure of their lives and to conquer their own mountains. We are grateful to all those who are supporting women in this way. Let your Corps, groups or community know that you can join in fundraising too!
