The Salvation Army’s Hauora Service is celebrating one year of accessible healthcare for the Auckland community, and is open for new patient enrolments.

The Salvation Army’s first medical centre in Aotearoa, Hauora Service opened in the Auckland suburb of Royal Oak in September 2023. Located at 691A Mount Albert Road, services include adult and child medical care, mental health management, general health and wellness, cervical screening, immunisation, lab results, Tamariki Ora health checks, chronic disease management, sexual health check-ups, and more.

According to Practice Manager Bhoomesh Shreedam, ‘Hauora’ refers to a specific approach to healthcare incorporating individual wellbeing.

The service is also accepting new patients who live in the Auckland area, no matter their background. Shreedam says there’s a misconception Hauora is only for vulnerable people. Anyone, he says, can enrol.

He adds the acceptance of new patients and their whānau comes as many GPs across the motu are closed to new enrolments, and long wait times at clinics for appointments. This isn’t the case at Hauora—some patients can even get on-the-day appointments.

Shreedam says being part of The Salvation Army also means wraparound support is available for Hauora patients and their whānau. As an example, he says budgeting support is available if someone is struggling with paying for services.

Hauora “goes back to what The Salvation Army is about,” says Shreedam. “It’s about affecting positive change in the community. We’re transforming lives.”
