We continue to advocate for more of a focus by government and it’s funding on rehabilitation and reintegration services.
Nearly $4 billion is being spent on the justice sector with approximately 40 per cent of that funding to Police, 30 per cent to the Ministry of Justice (includes court and judiciary) and 30 per cent to the Department of Corrections. The Treasury’s most recent analysis of the fiscal costs of crime in New Zealand was in a 2006 report which stated that crime cost us over $9 billion in 2003/04.
The figures in this report included, inter alia, the costs of lost property, productivity losses and the Treasury’s best estimate of the intangible costs of crime to our society.
