Summary
- The Salvation Army strongly supports the initiative to create a National Strategy for the elimination of family violence and sexual violence. We welcome the Te Hau Tangata draft strategy as a strong template for a national strategy and our submission proposes that the National Strategy be based on Te Hau Tangata (THT).
- The emphasis on preventing violence and working to shift attitudes is something The Salvation Army strongly supports. Our involvement with people who are subject to violence and those who are perpetrators of violence shows that success in reducing violence is most likely when the root causes are addressed, such as poverty, housing, systemic discrimination, among many other factors.
- The national strategy needs a clear understanding of the kind of violence being addressed that is linked to a strong vision for the future guided by robust principles that link to measurable outcomes to be achieved by realistic action plans.
